Sacha The Duchess breaks down Mr. Lover

We appreciate all types of music over here at eLIFE 242 (especially Rake n Scrape), but we always get excited when we see new, emerging Bahamian artist taking on other genres like R&B and Pop. Bursting on to the scene recently with an awesome new single accompanied with a shiny/sexy music video was Sacha The Duchess, whose new single “Mr. Lover” is making an impact on the local scene. We caught up with Sacha to talk to her about the music and the vision of The Duchess.

eLIFE 242 – What inspired the single?
Sacha- The inspiration behind this single is a very close and personal one. One night out of the blue I received a text message from my ex. It read “Hey what’s up, just checking up on you. I miss you.” It annoyed me because here he was showing concern for me and my well being when he didn’t do a great job of that when we were together. Furthermore he was married to the woman he cheated on me with and I had also moved on… it simply didn’t make any sense! My brain literally had a syntax error. I went to respond but so many thoughts and emotions began to flood my mind so I decided to write out my feelings instead and thats how Mr. Lover came to be. The first 2 lines of the song are actually what my response would have been had I sent the text I considered sending “Aren’t you married now? So why you blowing up my phone in the middle of the night saying you miss me”. For me the song was a way to set the record straight of where I was mentally an emotionally, which was free of my past, happy and stronger. It was also meant to throw some jabs in the sense that the tables had turned and like the songs says “ain’t nobody missing Mr. Lover.”

Who did you work with to produce the song and video?
For the production of the song I purchased the beat from a producer known as Blazian Beats and worked in the studio with Vmac of Elevation Media. The concept of the video was developed by myself and Kyle Ferguson of Jiggy Productions (and amazing videographer…worth every damn penny I might add) with the support of Tony Williams.

Are you planning to release more original music this year?
Yes I do plan to release more music and actually already did. I have a second single called Exhale (LISTEN NOW) which is available now on iTunes and all streaming platforms and is also in rotation on local radio. This track portrays a completely different attitude and style from Mr. Lover as it’s more vulnerable. It’s the emotion I felt while grieving the loss of another relationship where I felt completely abandoned and wanted that person back but realizing that I had to value myself and do what was best for me which was let go and give myself permission to breathe again. In addition to Exhale I am currently in the studio working to release a few more songs before the end of the year and then my EP early 2019.

You spoke Mandarin at the beginning of the video? What’s the story behind that?
I received a scholarship to study in China! I lived there for 2 years while studying for my Masters in International Relations. After graduation I returned for another 6 months to teach English. One of the best periods my life despite the misfortune of Exhale (Inside scoop – A lot of my songs are code names for the person I had that particular experience with…. It’s a running joke in the studio) While I am rusty with my Mandarin I still keep in touch with friends and catch up on Chinese TV when I have some time.
